If you figure out a way to get a lot of hits. (putting beta hl2 screens right when the beta got leaked... etc.. on your site) And put some ads on your site, can you make a lot of money? One site (gtwy.hl2arena.com) got a lot of hits really really fast because it had the latest news regarding the hl2 investigation. The guy that ran the site mentioned that if he HAD put ads on his page he could have been rolling in dough by now, but that he didn't becuase he wasnt doing it to make money.... So, anyone know about this?

Advertising on the web is a lost cause. Forget about it unless you get tons of constant visitors like Yahoo, Toms Hardware, AnandTech, etc...they *should* always be around, but Half-Life; that's a fad that will die out soon enough. See any more Pokemon websites? I didn't think so 😛

i had a surge of hits to my site for a bit, over 200,000 unique hits...had a click thru and made about 100 bucks 😉

What he just said. He took the words right out of my mouth.

You need constant visitors that will actually appreciate the ads. How often do you see yourself going to a HL2 website, and then clicking on a gambling ad? Not often I suppose.

Bootprint: It depends where you get your advertisers. If you get them directly, you can do either, sell by the thousands or by click. Usually if its a direct sale, the site will want to sell by thousands of views. If there is a company involved that finds the advertisers and such, then they usually do by click, although it has been done the other way too.

Running a "Local" community website, and actually soliciting ads for local businesses could be a potential money maker too, of course you need a reason to get people to come to your site, such as local News, weather or community events. The best way to do this would be to partner with a radio station that has a news department already.
