Make Firefox 3 the default e-mail client in Vista?

Is there a way to make Vista Ultimate 32-bit treat Firefox 3 as my default e-mail client? In XP this was possible by simply going into the Internet Explorer options and selecting the Programs tab, then choosing the Email service of choice, whether it was an external app like Outlook or webmail like Hotmail.

But in Vista, you only have the option of going to Default Programs and selecting Windows Mail or Outlook.

Given I've switched over to the 'cloud' king Gmail, and given the sadly questionable future of Thunderbird (see here: http://www.mozillazine.org/talkback.html?article=22235) I figured I would try to do without a separate e-mail app...but it seems like it's just not doable in Vista.
I've tried several sites that suggest (without seeming to know for sure) that it is possible with Gmail -- some say use the Gmail notifier (which worked better in XP than Vista) others say download Google Talk (which didn't work for me at all) and others suggested tinkering in Firefox's about:config settings.

But none of this has worked. Not even a little.

Is there anyone actually running Vista who has successfully configured their Gmail to be the default e-mail app and has gotten it to work the way an external e-mail client would work? That is to say, if I right-clicked on a .jpg and selected Send To --> Mail Recipient, it would open Gmail in Firefox in Create message mode?

This was totally doable in XP, but if it's not in Vista, that's fine. I'm just tired of these stupid sites with their ignorant (or outdated) and unproven suggestions that simply don't work.
So pls. only folks with Vista who HAVE fully achieved this need reply.
Thanks in advance!
