Having just had catastrophic virus attack on my computer(the "trashed" rig in my sig. I'm using P3 600 right this sec), I thought I'd remind you guys again to backup the hard drives now if you haven't already if your data is worth anything or has considerable sentimental values.

My hard drives was trashed by trojan horse. I tried just about every DIY hard drive repair softwares. None of them were able to recover ANY valid data and everything in the hard drive was a total loss.

You don't want to end up sending the drives to data recovery. I contacted Ontrack and was quoted $2,700 to recovery my drives. As much as I need want my data back, at $2,700 I'm giving up.

That is why I bought a USB hard drive. It comes with backup software, and everything I have now has a replicant :)

harsh!

After a number of years, I think I'm finally backed up to where I need to be. It gets harder and harder with the harddrives getting so big. I've got backups from mbr's to partition images, to a backup drive, as well as cdrw's that I try to keep current. If you take fires or theft, or something like that into account, backing up everything to cover for all possibilities can be tough.

<< yea, backups are good. but how did you get a trojan on your computer? Anti-Virus software didn't get it? and firewall either? >>

The Whiter Trojan is supposedly found in tainted Windows XP warez key gen. It infects the system when launched and does its payroll when the system is rebooted. Well I don't recall running such program nor do I recall downloading XP Key gen, so someone must have done it over the network..

I'm interested in ideas on how to backup about 160GB of stuff. Not that I have that much... yet, but I lost an 80GB to WinXP losing my FAT ( a legit WinXP, so it wasn't a trojan) and I'm now running 100GB and 60GB drives.

And I don't want to spend $3000 for a tape system to save my pr0n!

I'm thinking... build a file server with 2 100GB drives in it and use that to store the image of both of my drives. Sound idea?

This is why I built a fourth system, threw several 40 giggers in it along with windows 2000 and Smantec ghost multicast server :)

Hey, I feel your pain. I just had my second IBM hard drive (an RMA) in two years bite the dust. That's the last time I buy their crap. Luckily after the first failure I began to backup diligently. CD-R prices are so cheap now it doesn't really take much money and is more than worth the small time investment.

I typically backup extremely critical data either on a CDRW, tape, etc. I have Retrospect Workgroup (quite expensive about $250+) but with 4 Windows machines, it is worth EVERY penny. It effortlessly makes a backup of my machine with incrementals. I have an 80GB drive which I use for backups. You can do a disk->disk backup with this software. If you spend a little more and buy the server option, it will jump routers, etc. and do a secure backup across the internet!

Best Wishes.

I mirror my data from one drive to another quite often...

Never have really backed up my data to cd's, as it'd take too much time and I don't think I could stand to do it to be honest... :)

So jerboy, are you considering one of those data recovery programs?

edit: I just realized, I back up to a network drive, so if I had a virus that spread itself over the network (and I DID have one of these!), both of these archives might be trashed!

Backup media/drive must be physically isolated during everyday use. If you can add/erase file from desktop, so could a virus or trojan.

Use something like NTI Instant Backup to do incremental backup(even though its pathetically slow) or better get a drive of same size you have and mirror it using Ghost from time to time. Connect the drive, mirror it, then disconnect it when not in use.

For now, just zip up the files that are irreplaceable and record the zip files on CD. The reasons you zip it are CD has quite strict file name, directory depth rules and it changes your attribute. Everything in zip file will retain its original property. Losing pr0n might be sad, but not chaotic like losing files money can't buy.

I like to see it this way, you don't have it until its on cdrom, helps to motivate you to backup more often.

Fortunately the majority of my important info is backed up to a single CDR.

The rest of my stuff I have the installation CD's for, and my massive collection of mp3's and <cough>porn<cough> can be recovered from various sources across the net ;)
