Wow, that thing must have one hell of a pump/filtration system...

If it looked like that/was that empty for sure I'd love to swim in that thing. Especially if I get to rid around in one of them boats too.

I have a sneaking suspicion though that it isn't like having my own personal beach and more like super crowded insanity :(

Probably no worse than a beach at any other time. Plus, there's the added advantage of no sharks!

That seems pretty lame actually. Why do you want a giant pool? Id rather just go to the beach which is right next to it.

yeah.. I dont get it. I dont understand how they can even call that a pool?? All it does is pump water from the ocean (which is only like 50 feet away), then pump it back out.

edit:

It's like a much more advanced version of the shit I used to make on the beach as a kid. Dig the trench to flood a big hole, then run water out the other side.

Pros:
No sharks and other baddies.
No crazy waves.
Excellent Visibility.
Lower maintenance cost?

Cons:
No marine life for snorkeling.
Probably needs to be dumped and refilled every few years.

It is warmer than the ocean. This is southern Chile, it's getting the cold water coming up from Antartica. The article says the ocean is 17 degrees Celsius, which translates to 63 F, which is goddamn cold for water you're going to swim in.

It is safer than the ocean as there are no currents, riptides or undertows to drag small children or inexperienced swimmers out to sea. There are no predators or dangerous animals around (jellyfish for example, though I don't know how prevalent those are in Chile). It is also presumably patrolled by lifeguards, although it is South America, so maybe that's just wishful thinking.

It is cleaner than the ocean, as the filtration system removes all the nasty shit that the ocean has in it. Which is a lot of nasty shit. Sure, you aren't drinking it, unless you want to die (it is still saltwater), but I'd much rather swim in water I can see through.

It is the world's largest pool, so it gets written up and potential tourists think "boy, I'd like to see that," which brings tourists, and money, into the city, boosting the economy. People can see the ocean anywhere; they'll pay a lot to see something truly unique.

Yeah, there are a few reasons to have it. I'd swim in it at least once... I'd still probably prefer the ocean, but hey, cool idea at least.

It cycles the water from the ocean. No recirculating, and only needs to filter the incoming ocean water.

My first questin was why build such a large pool right next to the ocean. My question was answered in the article. The ocean water is warmed to 29° C.

This reminds me that my mom and dad learned to swim in the largest pool in the United States (at the time), Fleishhacker Pool in San Francisco. (More info) It used unheated seawater. I doubt the filters were all that good, either!

I remember walking past it (empty and no longer in operation) on our way to the zoo when I was little.
