Make a desktop folder on Win7 act like a desktop folder

This is something that has always annoyed me in Windows 7, and so far my Google skills have not been able to help.

I have a couple of folders on my desktop that have shortcuts to various things, like important documents or programs I use fairly regularly but not enough for a real desktop icon. Well any time I open a desktop folder in Win7 it opens a full blown windows explorer window, and I get my standard view. i.e all panes turned on, detailed view, maximized, etc.

Is there any way to get a desktop folder to behave as it has in every other version of windows per Win7, where it just opens a floating window, in icon view and no panes? BTW: Any time I change the views on the desktop folder windows, it affects my real windows explorer settings.
