to move the start menu / task bar to the left or anywhere else on the screen, just drag the bar to the disired location. hte task bar can go on all 4 sides on your screen in case you wer ewondering but i like it best on the bottom.

if you really want to go nuts, i suggest litestep, it's a total shell replacement, that means no more windows explorer gui

here's a link... litestep.net

careful though, its a bit tricky at first and i had to go into safe mode to change my system.ini plenty of times to get explorer.exe back

You can even put the QuickLaunch toolbar on a different edge than your task bar. That first screenshot looks lke that's what he did.

I know, But he has the one on the bottom, plus a shortcut ones on the side. How can this be done in Win 98 SE?

Why does everybody think it's bad to have a boring, single color desktop? I can't stand having background images on mine.

ICQ multi-user thing? You mean the floating names? Just click somebody in the contact list and select 'Floating On'. That pops up an always-on-top icon of their name so you don't have to bring up the ICQ window to message them or see their status, and you can drag it around.

I believe he may have Active Desktop turned on. The bar on the left is only a "New Toolbar" that represents specific folders on his hard drive, where he has stored shortcuts. However, I can't find a way to break that off as a separate toolbar from the main one. I know it's possible, but I think it may require active desktop. I only tried it once WAY back when IE4 first came out and multiple toolbars became available, and I never did it again.

Just grap the little "ridge" on your quick launch tool bar and drag it onto the desktop... It becomes a window. Then drag it to any edge.

DOH! That's the stupidest thing I've ever seen...

And you can then put ANOTHER quick launch bar back in your normal taskbar...
