make 50K/year or a little less and go out and buy a 60K car?

sheesh, i think my $22k jetta is already expensive and i'm making more than he does.
he has a ego problem.
he probably wants to impress chicks or something.
you never buy anything more than your salary unless it's a house.

wow,

I make a significant amount more than him, but I bought a 5000$ camry :)

but its a matter of choice, I hope he doesn't regret buying something out of impulse if and when he is in debt

agreed
a rule of thumb i've tried to live by (though not always) is to make sure i have twice the money of what i want to buy in my bankaccount before i buy it. So when i bought my car, (a 93 g20) for about 1500, i made sure i had about 3k in teh bank before i shelled out the cash. Mainly cause this will make sure i can afford to buy it, without taking leaving me financially floored. I may not have much cash in the bank (i'm a college student) but i try to spend it wisely

taking such a long term loan.. it seems like a bad idea. I hope he isn't planning on living with his parents for the nest 8 years.. no family of his own, house, wife, etc. these may be things he'll want later. well, best of luck to him i suppose...

Not financailly prudent, but it's his choice how he should spend his hard earned money.

An M3 is sweet to be sure, but buying a car that costs >100% of your salary is just plain ridiculous. You can say its just a "one shot" or a "vice", but that financial mentality will be a part of his life, and it almost certainly won't stop with the car.

his father always had nice cars, mostly BMW and mercedes, but then again they owned a resturaunt and made a good deal of money.

if he's living at home and doesn't have much outcome, I don't see the big deal.

sure, he'll be stuck at home for the next few years, but if he's alright with that...

that's how life works... three quarters of the population haven't got a clue
which is actually fine for ppl like you... if everyone in the country wizened up and started hunting down the 18 month old cars with 9,000 miles on them - where would you get that deal ???

If this means he moved in with his parents, then he has plenty of extra cash now.

chicks dig guys with expensive cars, of course they assume he has money. When he takes them back to his parents they'll really be impressed.

DINGDINGDING!!!

Exactly. Nobody is suffering but him. I'm making 50k, but have NO car payments. I'm supporting my wife and 2 kids in SoCal on that money, so I don't even consider anything besides essentials anymore. :(
