major trouble...No CD Audio....

I haven't been able to rip or play audio CD's in my DVD-ROM drive since I formatted and reinstalled XP. I just replaced my budget SB Live! with a budget Turtle Beach sound card and a S/PDIF cord to connect the DVD-ROM to the card. I have also selected to "Enable Digital CD Audio for this device" for the DVD-ROM drive. Yet I still do not have any sound. When I try to play CD's via Winamp, the drive speeds up and then Winamp gives me a track with a length of 7319:20 and doesn't play. Any ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: I can see the *.cda files and try to play them but they won't play. This is true of my LiteOn 24x Burner as well.

You don't need the s/pdif connection. The CD-audio can just be sent over the IDE cable, and altering that setup may be whats goofing things up.

Remove the connection, uncheck any settings you changed, and try it again.

Also, I've *NEVER* had good luck getting Winamp to play CD audio directly off the CD. Try Windows Media Player (or 'CD Player' if Win95/98).

control panel->system->device manager->CD/DVD-ROMS->properties on that drive.
Under one of the tabs there is a checkbox for enabling digital audio extraction. Check it, hit OK, restart, and you'll be good to go.

I have tried without the S/PDIF cable an no luck. I have selected "Enable Digital CD Audio for this device" in System properties and still no dice. Should i even bother to try and get a 3 (or 4) pin connector to go between dvd and sc? When i first bought this machine (gateway) it played CD's but after a format, it no longer does...
