major samba DC issues

Red Squirrel

No Lifer
Ok this is getting really bad. At random, I'll get a Windows machine that totally does not want to cooperate with the DC. Not sure if its something I have to fix at the windows end or Linux end, as samba has like, no logging so I have no idea what is going on.

Basically it will start off as not being able to log in, usually errors relating to machine account, or just domain not found.

I've done some windows side troubleshooting such as completly reinstalling TCP/IP and other protocols/services. I got to the point where I can actually do \\DC to get to the box. But when I disjoin and rejoin ,it wont let me join again. No matter what username and password I put it denies it. (tried domain\user and without domain\user).

This is a problem that starts at random and just hits a random machine every now and then. Usually have to reformat, and even then it wont always work.

Any suggestions?

Using Fedora core 5 and default samba. I'd update it but the repos for FC5 are gone, and upgrading the whole OS is just too huge of a task for what that server is for. In the future I want to separate my stuff to several servers so at least when one is down it wont be everything down, but for now FC5 will have to do.

well there's some, but like I RARELY see anything go in it.

Since the server is live I got maybe 5KB of logs, if that. They rarely get updated. Would be nice if it logged stuff like authentication failures and what not (with reasons) so I could perhaps debug this a bit more could be something very simple. But just dont know whats going on. Unless theres logs outside of /var/log/samba

If that's all you're getting then you need to look into the log level parameter of smb.conf or smbcontrol to adjust it at runtime.

I was trying to find something like that but theres nothing on log level, unless its something I have to add myself which I have no idea about.

Managed to rejoin domain, forgot that I changed my root password but forgot to change it for smb. Have no clue how to specify which users can add to domains so only root can right now.

Just still not sure what keeps causing machines to randomly loose contact with the domain altogether. 2nd time this happens now. Could the machine trust account be expiring? if yes how do I prevent that?

I think I have a similar issue. First, I an a ubuntu noob, so most of this is greek to me. In intalled the file sharing (is that samba ?) and set some directories to be shared with windows (I think is was smb?) and everything was fine. One day I reboot the ubuntu bax, and now in my windows box, when I click on mshome to expand (where it used to show up) it says something about no permissions, but I don't even get to enter the username/password like I used to. Can anyone help me ? Should I start a new thread ? or is this the same issue ?

And one more thing. I have two ubuntu boxes that I thought were configured Identically, but the windows machine can see one, and not the other, but not through the browser, it just reconnected (FAHMON sees it) but its the same broswer that won't expand the mshome directory. This is all too wierd....

OK< Ignore my post, I figured it out. I uninstalled Comodo firewall, problem solved, thanks anyway.
