MAJOR RANT: Region Codes, BBC, CNN, MPAA...

<RANT>

I was thinking about this while driving into work this morning. Does everyone remember that very brief period of time after 9/11 when many in the press were calling for Americans to have a better understanding of the world around them? That if Americans were more understanding of foreign cultures, just maybe terrorism wouldn't exist? I remember the media making such comments.

Now, in light of that, why do we have really freaking silly things like region codes on DVDs? Unless I buy a special DVD player, why can't I fly to Germany, by a DVD, and simply insert it into my Best-Buy DVD player and have it simply work? Why does the industry make it so damned hard to watch a cool foreign movie with English subtitles that may NOT have been released in the US? (There must be thousands...each better than 99% of the $hit produced in Hollywood.)

In a similar vein, why can't DirectTV simply point its satellites in a different way, enabling ALL of its American customers to get channels like BBC World, ZDF Germany, Deutsche Welle, channels from France, Spain, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, South Korean, etc.? Why does my fvcking news have to be filtered through the likes of American-based CNN? Why is that CNN provides CNN International to the REST of the world, but it's very difficult to get it here in the US? WHY CAN'T I WATCH BBC'S TOP GEAR EVERY WEEK LIKE THE REST OF THE WORLD??? Why can't I turn on my TV and watch the Euro 2004 games???

WHY?!?!?!?

The demand is RIGHT HERE you fvcking a$$wipes. CNN, FoxNews, DirectTV, Comcast: DO YOU FVCKING HERE ME???

Freedom of choice: my a$$! International competition: my a$$!

And this is not a Democrat vs. Republican issue. This is a corporate issue!

I really doubt there's much demand for all of that foreign programming here in the U.S. And the reasoning behind region codes is valid. Again, if the demand was there they'd release it in the U.S., but there's no demand.

So you're saying Americans aren't cultured nor have a desire to be? I guess our friends in "Old Europe" are right.

Yeah, I'm sure Germany is just immersed in Japanese culture. :roll: I guess American culture doesn't qualify as "culture" anymore. Our friends in "Old Europe" can think what they want, their countries aren't anything to write home about either.
