i have always had a raid array in my main system. At least for the past 3 years or so. over the past few years i have built at least 3 completely new system. Brand new everything. So its not hardware, or software. meaning totally different systems, but i still put a raid 0 array in it. The reason i use a raid array is because i can add drives together to make one large drive. It provides me with some very nice organization options.
My problem is this, when i transfer data within, from, or to my raid 0 array, my system slows down to a crawl. And at times stops responding for a short period. i am only talking about simple data coping and moving. As i stated earlier i have changed hardware, software, and even brands. Still the same issue.
AS stated earlier i have this same issue with all of my 'main' system over the past 3 years. I have finally have to nerve to fix it.
Some solutions i have thought of are-
1.) getting a pci-express raid controller
2.) getting a raid controller with its own memory and cpu
3.) your advice.
My current raid array is-
2x 200gb in raid 0 on a silicon image 3112a controller card. raid -(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815104219) and hd- (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144183)
i am looking at either -
HighPoint RocketRAID 1640 PCI (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16816115015)
SIIG Two-port SATA II (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815150064)
i already bought SYBA SD-SA2PEX-2IR (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815124027) and it was doa. so returning that.
my system specs are as follows,
amd athlon 3000 @ 2.4
geil ddr500 (512x2)@ 250
dfi ultra-d
ati x700 pro
WD740GD onboard sata channel 1
6L300S0 onboard sata channel 3
and other crap which doesn't matter....
Now i have tried using the onboard nvida raid, that my board supports and it worst then using my pci controller.
i have used the following controller cards-
Koutech PSA150 (currently using)
nforce 4 raid (onboard raid)
SIIG SC-SAT212 PCI
sil 3512 controller card
PROMISE FASTTRAK xxxx(i don't remember the model and can't find it)
their are more controller cards then that, but i don't remember them.
Now any ideas or thoughts?
PS. one last item to point out is that when i burn a dvd. every other dvd burns at 1x (at best), because my system cant transfer data fast enough. its like its flooded or something. One example i have is in nero 6. If i don't use the determine maximum speed feature, then every other dvd burns at 1x or below. If i do use it. then 80-90% of the time, they burn at 11-12x. Never hits 16. but that other 10-20% they burn at 3-4x. I have tested many different dvd burns, all with the same effect. During i have two in their. A liteon 1693 and an nec 3520a.
i am in a hurry, as i am borrowing a friends hds, in order to transfer my raid data over. he needs them back asap, though.
