major problems with new monitor

Ok, i'm having some seriously huge problems with this new monitor i got, i just installed the Video card, and now it won't let me adjust the monitor type so that it actually works, it keeps telling me it's a default Compaq one when it's not, and it's only letting me use 16 colors which is annoying because it's hard to even see what i'm writing right now, ah well, this ssucks, any ideas, please email me directly, thanks,
