Major problem viewing any type of video files

So all of the sudden, anytime I try to view .wmv, .mov, .mpeg, etc., any media player I use goes into 99% CPU usage and just shows a black screen. Whether it's streamed from the internet, on the hard drive, or a DVD in my optical drive it still does the same thing. Sometimes a video file will play fine, then I'll go back later and try as many times as I want and it will still do what I described above. Today, for instance, I was watching some videos from google video and it worked perfectly, then I went and tested .wmv and .mpeg files on my HD and it froze again.

Yesterday it would completely lock up and blue screen on me, nv4_disp.dll is what it showed as the culprit. I have done the following to try and remedy the situation, with no success:

-different codec packs
-different video drivers (I used Driver Cleaner everytime)
-different media players

None of that worked so I reinstalled XP, same problem. I've played FarCry and HL2 with zero issues. Also music files play fine. It just happens with video files for some reason. Video card temps are normal by the way.

System Info:
AMD Athlon 64 2800+
2 x 512MB Ram
MSI NX6600GT

Any ideas?
