Major Problem need assistance

Okay Last night before I went to bed I installed the new windows updates. Shut my computer off got back on this morning and played some Star wars galaxies. My computer starting acting real flaky like it would freez up and then just shut off and when it loaded back up it said something in the registry was messed up but, recovered. It did it again but this time instead of booting up it boots to the bios and says that it cannot recognize the processor in my computer, I checked the settings in the bios and they are all right. I save and exit the bios and my monitor goes off like it always does on a restart but, will not turn back on and goes into standby mode. If I hit reset it still doesn't help I try to tunr the monitor on and off and nothing. I let it set like that for a while and the music form windows loading up didn't come on so i dunno WTF. I have tried several ways of getting this too work to no avail.
I haven't messed with anything hardware wise in a long time.
All 512 mb of ram are recognized in the bios.

I'm wondering if the processor finally went kaput on me the computer has been acting kinda wierd lately.
I'm so pi$$ed Ime and my roomates are supposed to be getting a T1 line today.

I would guess it has to be a processor problem considering what it said in the bios but, the registry message bothers me I guess it may have had something to do with the computer just shutting off suddenly.

1700+ T-bred
Asus A7V333
Geforce4 TI4200
60GB deskstar
Turtle Beach SC
Antec 1040 case (400watt PS)

Any help or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

How long have you had that 1700+? Are you overclocking? What are you cooling it with?

I'd say it's almost definitely your CPU dying on you. Windows doesn't affect your bootup, so the only things that could be messing with things then are your boards (BIOS, RAM, CPU, cards, etc.).

I've had the processor sincelate Nov last year, I think, bought it used on the forums though so....

I'm not overclocking at all
Just using a generic HS and fan with a thermal pad on it (i don't OC).

Do you have an idea of yoru temps?
Also see if you have some spare ram to test with, though that may not be likely.
Turning the monitor on shows nothing, so it could be the video card too...but since the processor wasn't being recognized, I think this is what's wrong:

The motherboard may be messing up, not recognizing your processor etc. The AGP interface may also be messing up, preventing the video signal from going through. It seems the northbridge could be the culprit, as both the video and the processor were funking out a bit.

Which chipset does the board carry? Any cooling on the northbridge?

All the temps were fine CPU temp of 38 case about the same. This is in the bios now anyways

I've got two case fans in the antec 1040 case.

I checked my AGP card and it may have not been in all the way, I pulled a case fan (to measure it) today and I may have knocked it loose (When i pulled my case out). One way or the other it is definitely seated now and shows up on startup as it did before. I'm still getting the the problem with the processor not being recognized upon booting up the computer. Stuck
WTF this is really wierd

How could the ram have to do with the processor not being recognized?
It doesn't seem like it would hmmmm (maybe I'm wrong though I dunno)

I dunno what to do.

i guess i may just have to order a new processor. 🙁i hate doing that not knowing for sure that is whats wrong)

I just wish it was something else, I gotta hit the sack (I work wierd hours).

I'll be back on this afternoon/evening.
any help would be great.

I hope it isn't the processor.

I went ahead and took the heatsink off should the processor look messed up if it is burnt out?

The only thing I can notice is glue melted but, that is pretty normal i think

Diagonostic?

Oh and to add new espically complicating information to the equation afer I put the heatsink back on and started the computer back up again and it read that I only have 128mb of memory WTF (I had just seen it numerous times before removing the heatsink that it said it had 512)

I don't see how it could possibly say that I have two sticks of 256 and how in the heck could this have changed man I'm getting pi$$ed, I have not had the best luck with AMD processors and there third party motherboards, I'm about ready to switch to the darkside (intel). I am so mad I could explode. I had almost accepted the fact that it was the processor now this, I don't have a clue as to whats going on now or what the problem is

another plea for help

I just re-read your post.

Well, try reseating your RAM. Be sure and ground yourself or touch one of the screws on the back of the case before touching inside the case.

RE:"Okay Last night before I went to bed I installed the new windows updates"

This very well could be a Microsoft problem. Can you roll back the updates?
It would not be the first time. To blame AMD after a windows update is a reach.

Mac

I reseated the ram still the problem is the same.

I wonder if my bios is somehow screwed up so I'm going to flash the bios and see if that has any effect on it.

Any other ideas, Sorry for bitching about AMD I was just tired and angry.

okay reseated the ram a third time and finally got it to work the other day.......

Anyway my new HS and fans plus a another stick of ram came in today.

I put everything in and started up the computer same problem as last time.

Well angrily i take the heatsink off and made a tiny chip on the edge of the processor i guess now it is ruined...... crap.

Well i'm ordering a new processor but, either way it does not explain why the monitor would not turn on when i booted up after the the intial problem with it not reading the processor right. Is it because I had to unplug the computer to turn it off? I messed with it for hours cleared the CMOS any assistance to why my freaking monitor would not turn back on would be greatly appreciated

Maybe the stinking board is bad.....

I am so freaking mad.......

I guess I'm just going to order a new processor and Motherboard from Newegg and just eat $hit on the 120 that the stuff cost me.

Maybe the motherboard is okay. At this point I don't give a crap apprently there is no possible way of figuring this problem out unless I have extras of every damn compponent. Also, I feel like a moron for chipping the processor, it was on the mirror part so I guess I'll assume it is ruined right.

Any help or words of understanding would truly help right now.
I am freaking steaming.

Hey, you live and learn. Sorry about your $ though.

Just start over and reinstall everything without the windows update. Put your CPU in, HSF on and Ram in before you put the board in the case. Then look at it from the side and see that the DIMMS are down all the way on either end. Make sure the Fan is pluged in to the mobo header.
Then install the mobo. Make sure the mobo is not grounded out, the head of the screws inside the solder ring.
Basicall do all you can to the mobo before you install it.

If you start screwing with the CPU, HSF and RAM AFTER the mobo is installed you're chances of breaking something or bending a capacitor go way up.
I never try to take off a HSF when the mobo is installed and if I have to I'll remove any cards that get anywhere in the way.

Sounds to me like you could RMA the mobo but you'll probably not get a new CPU because it's chipped.

Take your time and don't force anything.

Okay anyway my friend gave me his new 1700+ xp to try out in the motherboard, I put it in same problem as before. So I mess with ram again finally working with one piece of 512 in the 3 hole 🙂.

Since the core is only slightly chipped is it possible that the processor would still work? Because if so, I will sell it on the forums at a reduced price, if DOA they just have to pay the shipping back (crap just send it back in an envelope that wouldn't cost more than a buck). Does that seem like a fair shake? That way I may be able to recoup some of the losses from having to buy my friend a new 1700+ XP. I don't want to mess with putting it back in this system for fear of running into new issues, because the computer will be out my door in a couple of days and I already told the buyer I am putting a new processor in the computer and explained the ram issues to him, informing him that only one slot may be avaiilible.
Man this sucker is running so smooth now I kinda wish I was keeping it, OTW laptop here i come.
