this is so wierd, i leave for class at 3, and my computer is working fine, i come back at 4 and its frozen on the windows xp startup screen. so im like WTF?!

i restart it and it scans the disc than continues booting then an error message pops up that says

winlogon.exe- entry point not found.
........................the procedure entrypoint AssocIsDangerous could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLNAPI.dll

(then i press the 'ok' button below it and this next window pops up saying...)

user interface failure
........................the logon user interface msgina.dll failed to load

so there is no way i can get into my windows xp shell (not safe mode or anything)... ive booted with the 98boot disc and replaced the files shlnapi.dll, and msgina.dll in both system32 and dllcache directories. After typing all this im thinking i might try replacing the winlogon.exe file but will this work? any help would be greatly appreciated.

btw I REFUSE TO FORMAT... to many precious files on there :p

Have you tried using the restore feature (fix feature) on the winXP cd?

it only overwrites the windows files...all your data will stay..of course you should always back up :)

The other thing to do is to figure out why it happened in the first place.... it is possible you left your computer in the sun? or maybe your windows was corrupt and when the screensaver did its thing... or the ram could have just gone screwy... I dunno - probably a good idea to find out why it happened, so you don't run the risk of losing data again. Also, once you get everything up and running, you might want to invest in a backup solution like an external hd, or at least burn stuff you have... I email important stuff to myself - but then again, I have a decent sized inbox

1 .Reboot into "safe-mode" and logon (you'll get the same error message).
2.Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete (Task Man) > File > Run >cmd.exe (opens a command window)
3. cd %systemroot%\system32\
4. Ren shlwapi.dll shlwapi_sick.dll
5. Copy ..\servicepackfiles\i386\shlwapi.dll
6. reboot
If that doesn't work do the repair install.
