I just finished installed Windows XP Pro on my workstation, and I have a LAN with a Windows 2000 Server hosting files. At first, everything seemed great. I have all my software and files backed up on the server, and I started to install software from the server, and it was blazing fast. Then after installing Winzip, Winamp, Adobe Acrobat, and lastly Norton Antivirus, I rebooted. Well, after the reboot, all my problems started to occur. I was still able to browse to my Windows 2000 server, but anytime I attempted to open a file, my system completely hangs, and I have to reboot. I thought it was because I didn't have NetBeui, but I didn't have that installed before, and I was still able to get files from my server. I can copy very small files, like 1KB files and stuff. But I try to convert mp3 files on the server to wav files to my workstation, freeze.

My network is off of the Netgear RT314 router, with two computers on 100mbit. I previously had Windows 2000 Pro on my workstation, and it worked flawlessly.

Is there a known issue with Windows XP and network browsing and file transferring? Please help!

I never ran into that problem....set up another account on the server...reboot log in and then check the network if it is fine then there is a program loaded on your main log in which is the problem

Check your Nortons program, see if Autoprotect is running. If it is, it checks everything coming into your machine first which slows things down greatly. I'm running basically the same config with no problems however my Autoprotect is off.

It was absolutely the STUPIDEST thing in the world. Thanks to the non-working XP drivers for my NIC that was causing all the problem. After downloading the drivers and installing the drivers from Linksys, everything is working again.
