Major/minor how does it work?

So once I hit the uni level and I declare my major... how do I get a minor in something? What does this minor do? Do you get a certificate or is it still a degree?
 
Typically a minor is 20 hrs. of classes in that field. It's just listed on your transcipt that you minored in it. I'm not sure if it's on the actual degree thing itself. I don't have mine here or I'd check.
 
Minors just signify a, well, minor concentration in an area. For example, I've done about 33, 34 credits of higher level math in my undergraduate career, roughly equal to a year of work. AFAIK it's not listed on anything other than your transcript.
 
It doesn't really mean much... I guess if you could tie it to your major it might be useful. I didn't get any sort of certificate/diploma regarding the minor.
 
In you degree plan, it will say what all classes are required. In that it will say a minor is required, here are the accepted minors. Some majors are very picky about minors CS major might not let you minor in MIS, but that depends on your school. So you pick from the accepted minor, say Biology. You go over to the Biology dept, and pick up their list of courses required for a minor in Biology. Then you take the classes and fill them in your degree plan.
