MAJOR Maxtor hdd issues - need advice

Last month, I picked up a 120gig Maxtor drive for media storage on my system. (I've got a 100gig WD drive as my master) Well, that Maxtor was screwed up and wouldn't even format. So, I exchanged it for another one, which lasted for two weeks before having a major meltdown. Now, I've exchanged it AGAIN. So, I currently have a THIRD Maxtor drive sitting on my desk, unopened.

My question: Do I take a hint and just get another WD drive, or do I take a chance and install this third Maxtor? Is it possible that my system just does not like Maxtor drives? Do they suck? I have to admit, I'm a little gunshy about this brand right now....

What motherboard do you have? Are you using the mb controller? I had a bad maxtor, but it was replaced and it has lasted a couple years now. If you can exchange it for a wd and it will make you fell better then go ahead and change it.

Generic 350w that came with my case. Good thought, though. I have two CD drives, two hard drives, and two fans plugged into the PS. Think I don't have enough juice?

When installing new HDs I have just one policy....NEVER EVER use that piece of garbage installation software that they give you....let windows do all the formatting and handleing.

Question:

Are you sure the WD master is jumpered correctly?
Their drives still use the archaic "Master Only" and "Master w/ Slave Present" separate settings.
Check your jumpers.

Just to be argumentative... I've been using MaxBlast software for all my new hard drives for the last 10 years or so. I have always had at least one Maxtor in my systems so it can be used for all drives. (Current main system has two Maxtors and two IBM's.) I find it much easier and simpler to set up new drives with MaxBlast and I've never had a problem using it. This experience includes Win95, Win98 and WinXP.

Thanks for the input, guys. I had some other problems pop up, so I just bit the bullet and installed the new Maxtor as the master drive and put a clean install of XP on it. Seems to be working just fine. Let's hope for the best....
