Major issue with my digital camera

I have an older digital camera (HP Photosmart 320). It came with a 32MB SD Card, which has been in the camera since I got it. I found a brand new 64MB card, so I took the 32MB card out, and my camera asked me to format the new card, which I did.

I took a few pictures, as well as a few short videos. When I exported the pictures/videos to my PC, some issues came up. The videos play fine. The pictures though do not open. When I have it to view them as thumbnails, all it shows is the icon for JPEG image. When I click on it, it says "generating preview", and then about 5 seconds later says "preview not available"

I'm wondering what the heck is going on with this new card. Did I do something wrong, or might there be a physical issue with the card? Any assistance to this matter would be greatly appreciated.

What software are you using to transfer the pictures to your PC?

Get a card reader/writer and move the SD card from the camera to the computer. No special software is needed or recommended. Just look at what you have with Windows Explorer - click on an image file and it should open.

Special software is more often than not, the main cause of image file corruption.

Also, try pure still images with no video at all on the SD module.

I tried it with the camera connected to the computer, and then I tried it with the USB card reader. It is the same issue in both cases. The pictures are there, but are unable to be "viewed"

I'm not using any special software. I just allowed Windows to detect the camera, and transfer the pictures over.

Does the old stick still work? Probably the camera doesn't support the 64Mb stick. Some older cameras don't support the newer sticks. It's not just the memory size, there's an electronic difference in the newer sticks.

It's possible there's a firmware update for the camera that allows support for the newer sticks.

Secure digital (SD) memory card (128 MB is the maximum usuable card size)

Could the camera be protecting the pictures from copying?
I mean, what does the "S" stand for in SD anyway?

Can you actually view the pictures while they're still in the camera?

Yes, I can view the pictures when they are in the camera, but cannot view them when I remove the card and put it in my card reader. They are there, but cannot be viewed

Here's another thought. Check your maeras setup/preferences menu and see if you are correctly setup to the right video format for your monitor . . . NTSC or PAL.

I got the new stick to work.

What I ended up doing is copying the directories on the 32mb card and cloned them to the 64mb card. Now it seems to work fine. I'm not sure why it had to be done this way, but it now works correctly. Thanks everyone for your input

Maybe there was a special "format memory card" menu item on the camera that would write those directories onto new memory cards that you may have missed.

Although, I'm talking out of my ass so I could be wrong.
