Major injuries you had as a kid.

Started young?
Yep, onset @ 5...
First 20 years were foyne...then the complications kicked in. 😡

Never had any major breaks, at least not until 22. Numerous sprains and costochondral separations in both sides of my torso at different times...guess I had a rubbery body/skeleton. I crashed soooo many times riding trails on BMX bikes and never a serious injury from it.

I had a head injury that screwed up my balance and speech and completely changed my personality.

Got my right foot smashed between a tree and the 4wheeler I was on, made my foot point to 4 o'clock. I was 14 I think? Was already in trouble for something else, didn't want to explain what we had been doing so kept it to myself and tried to ignore it. At the time was worried my parents were on the verge of breaking up, things were bad. I didn't want to rock the boat. Ankle was bigger than a grapefruit, wore baggy pants and did my best to conceal my limp. Coach let me skip a week of hockey to ride it out, gave me some help with it, but kept my secret. Wasn't smart, but that's what kids do when they are afraid. Ankle eventually healed up, but I was left with a bit of nerve damage. There is a patch on my ankle where I still don't feel anything.

It's made me sure to avoid anything like that with my sons. They know Dad will never be mad at them for getting hurt, that they're safety comes first to me.

Nobody should ever be afraid of seeking help after an injury, especially kids. They need to know their safety and health is most important so they aren't reluctant to reveal it.

Your story isn't the first or only time I've heard about kids being reluctant to tell parents or adults about injuries. It's almost always fear that causes it. But fear of what? Blame/fault? Anger? Retribution? I don't know, but being an illogical fear doesn't negate it.

Good on you for killing that (possible) assumption for them. Physical safety and knowing help is close and available is a lot of what allows children to feel secure in their own homes and families.

Never really had anything all that serious. I remember I used to love rollerblading down the hill just up my street. One time I lost my balance and fell and got scrapped up pretty good. At the time I felt that was pretty major, had scabs all over for a while. It was fun picking at them though.

Another one I can think of is back at Bible camp while playing a field game similar to capture the flag I slipped on wet grass and landed badly on my hand, basically twisting it the wrong way and hurt my wrist. Went to the ER and everything to make sure it was not broken. Spent the rest of the week having trouble getting up my bunk bed, and putting ice on it a lot, and having to sit at the sidelines for most games that require to use that hand, like hockey and such.

There's probably other similar injuries of that nature I'm not thinking of, but overall, never really had anything all that serious or life altering.

Never broke any bones in my life. *touch wood*

Was about 8 and ran around a glass coffee table chasing my brother, tripped and fell and my head hit the side of the glass breaking it and gave my head a good cut right above the eye socket. I was more worried about breaking the table than the blood pouring out of the open cut. I remember my brother pointing at my head and saying something like "Bro, I can see your skull". lol. Had about 8 stitches and lifetime scar where part of my eyebrow won't grow.
