Major Harddrive Problems, pls help

I have DirectX 8 and I'm pretty sure it's messing up my harddrive performance.

Doing a Direct X diag it seems as though my harddrives are not being properly supported and are in MS-DOS mode. Making my harddrives performance plummets I mean REALLY slow, I cant even play CounterStrike🙁.

Harddrives:
Maxtor 20gig 7200rpm
western dig 10gig 54000rpm

I was wondering how can I unistall DirectX 8 and get a stable version back on. Without doing a format.

Or if you guys know the problem and how to fix it please do tell. Thanks.

And I've tried reinstalling windows (not formatting, not really an option), finding drivers, removing the devices, ect ect. And its all a no go.

sounds very much like the noide bug in the registry.

Does your motherboard require another IDE controller?

if it is the noide bug how do I go about fixing it?

And yup I am using win98, this is the first time I've ever come accross somthing like this.
