  • The quake traps an unknown number of people in Turkish village
  • U.S. and Turkish earthquake agencies offer different magnitudes
  • The earthquake is considered major
Istanbul, Turkey (CNN) -- A major earthquake collapsed several buildings in eastern Turkey on Sunday, trapping an unknown number citizens under debris in Van Province, state news agency Anadolu reported Sunday.

The buildings collapsed in central Van, in the village of Tabanli, the report said.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake had a magnitude of 7.3, though Turkey's National Earthquake Monitoring Center reported a magnitude of 6.6.

Aftershocks are expected.

The USGS reported a depth of 4.5 miles, or 7.2 kilometers; the center in Turkey said the quake was about 3 miles, or 5 kilometers, deep.

The quake took place 12 miles from Van, at 1:41 p.m. local time, the USGS said.

Video from CNN Turk showed the inside of shaking buildings, and people gathering outside on the streets.

The area is "no stranger to having these seismic events," but Sunday's quake is considered major, CNN Meteorologist Reynolds Wolf reported.

One concern is displacement of water along Lake Van, which could send water gushing into nearby areas, particularly along the west side, Wolf reported.

CNN's Yesim Comert contributed to this report.

i don't recall any of Anandtechs Earthquake and disaster forcasters predicting this one...

How amusing, a major earthquake hits a middle eastern country and nobody gives a shit. The news just isn't breaking.

/P&N 😛

Most of Turkey is in earthquake zone so the quake is hardly surprising.

After that its maybe important to say, the cause of earthquakes have nothing to do with
human politics.

Why would Turkey be down playing the numbers by 10%.

To make it seem as if it is not as serious as it is?

USGS is considered to be the standard.

Or has the USGS been inflating the #s all along

Human politics apparently play a part in the recovery though.

Israel twice offered help and was refused. Turkey was pissed about no apology for the flotilla fiasco.

Turkish workers are complaining that very little help is arriving, there are few professionals around.

Now, Turkey has asked for help and Israel has responded.
