CBS News

(CBS) A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths.

An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, Menu Foods said in announcing the North American recall. Product testing has not revealed a link explaining the reported cases of illness and death, the company said.

?At this juncture, we're not 100 percent sure what's happened,? said Paul Henderson, the company's president and chief executive officer. However, the recalled products were made using wheat gluten purchased from a new supplier, since dropped for another source, spokeswoman Sarah Tuite said. Wheat gluten is a source of protein.

The recall covers the company's ?cuts and gravy? style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between Dec. 3 and March 6 throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Company, Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., among others, Henderson said.

Menu Foods did not immediately provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall, saying they would be posted on its Web site ? www.menufoods.com/recall ? early Saturday. Consumers with questions can call (866) 463-6738.

The company said it manufacturers for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies, including Procter & Gamble Co.

P&G announced Friday the recall of specific 3 oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch cat and dog wet food products made by Menu Foods but sold under the Iams and Eukanuba brands. The recalled products bear the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197, P&G said.

Menu Foods' three U.S. and one Canadian factory produce more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The recall covers pet food made at company plants in Emporia, Kan., and Pennsauken, N.J., Henderson said.

Henderson said the company received an undisclosed number of owner complaints of vomiting and kidney failure in dogs and cats after they had been fed its products. It has tested its products but not found a cause for the sickness.

?To date, the tests have not indicated any problems with the product,? Henderson said.

The company alerted the Food and Drug Administration, which already has inspectors in one of the two plants, Henderson said. The FDA was working to nail down brand names covered by the recall, agency spokesman Mike Herndon said.

Menu Foods is majority owned by the Menu Foods Income Fund, based in Ontario, Canada.

Henderson said the recall would cost the company the Canadian equivalent of $26 million to $34 million.

I have a feeling this is going to cost them more than $34 million once the lawsuits start...

I feed my cats Iams canned food, even had some of the "chunks and gravy" type, same factory date code wasn't included in the recall though.
It worries me a bit though. One of them has urinary tract problems and has to be kept on canned food. :(

You do realise that IAMS/Eukanuba are two of the most respected brands in the industry and are universally recommended by veterinarians as being among the best pet foods available, right?

(Every vet I've ever asked has listed IAMS, Eukanuba, and Science Diet as the top brands for pet foods.)

I have had some vets tell me to stay away from science diet..

They do pay vets to put that food on their shelves

I could be wrong.. is there some independent review committee?

None of the vets I've ever used have sold food, so I'm pretty damn sure that the companies aren't "paying vets to put that food on their [the vets'] shelves".

These things, while most unfortunate, do happen. I've gotten bad meat from local butchers. I've had friends that got sick from locally-grown organic produce. It's simply not possible to ensure that everything is always sterile.

My issue is with the knee-jerk "big companies only care about profits and don't care about pets" comment. It smacks of hasty generalization and ignorance.

Sorry about that.. but I have never yet been to a vet office that didn't sell food

and.. Another thing... do you feel like the service at places like PetCo and PetSmart is good and the employees are highly trained and knowledgeable?

My fault too for not mentioning that it's perfectly possible that the companies do pay some vets for shelf space. I just wanted to point out that the places I've had recommend the foods don't sell them.

As for the large places like PetCo and PetsMart, employees are hit-or-miss. I'm confident that they know more than the average person on the street, but I'm also confident that the average person on the street is an idiot. :p I generally get advice from my vet and then just use the places like PetCo to buy the products.

If you're looking for ignorance and hasty generalizations, dahunan is your man. At least he hasn't yet called for the execution of all the employees at the "big evil corporations", but I'm not yet finished reading the thread so there's always hope.

Heller I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you get punative damages and your vet bills paid. That is horrible.

My sisters vishla died from kidney failure a few years ago and my sister fed her the same food. I wonder now if that could have been what killed the dog because the vet was at a loss trying to figure out what caused it in an otherwise perfectly healthy 3 year old dog. She spent at least 4 grand in vet bills trying to save her dog from the beginning to the end of the ordeal but in the end it was hopeless.

Going to pass that article on to my sis. This makes me glad that I don't feed my cats wet catfood anymore. I buy cheap tuna for like 39c a can and eat a little and give them the rest as a treat about once a week. The cheap stuff tastes better than the solid white tuna out of the can but the solid white tastes better with mayo on sandwhiches.

Horrible to feed your dog expensive foods thinking your doing your best for them and they die from it. Very sorry and hope everyone gets justice.
