after multiple formats and installations of xp pro my computer hangs after booting into the OS. Everything is fine after the first few days of installation. I am able to install programs, play games, restart and boot into xp like usual. All of a sudden after a few days I reboot for whatever reason and log into my account and everything hangs?. I can move the mouse and click the different icons but nothing comes up?the start button pops up my programs but none of them open and i can ctrl alt del for the task manager?..one time I logged in and quickly clicked my browser which opened but became unresponsive a few seconds later along with the rest of the system.. lately I have been using system restore to go back to the day before but I have been unable to pinpoint exactly creates the problem between the restore date and the date the system hangs?..any ideas??

I'd keep a handwritten log of everything you install, settings you change, and any other system events.

Chances are, a service is locking up XP. This can be caused by printer drivers, network access (including high-speed internet), or by an automatic update even.

If you can log in to Safe Mode, try going to msconfig, look in the services tab, check "hide ms services," and then you'll have a small list of non-system services that are more than likely the problem. Try uninstalling different ones, disable network access/adapters, and whatever else you can think of until the problem is solved. Good luck.
