Major BSOD!!!!

First, I gotta explain my first twoo weeks with this computer. I installed my single SATA HD on my ASUS K8V SE on the raid controller instead f the single SATA port it should be on. I put it in the the right one, and the HD does not recognize. Yesterday I had a professional install a vga silencer for ati 9800 pro. that works fine. However when I push my cpu now, it BSODs sayig that I need to contact my hardware vendor for bios update. Well, a week ago I used the ASUS update program to EZFlash the Bios which went horribly wrong. So I had to reformat. Now when I push the comp, I am getting BSODs, but this was after my vga silencer install. What should I do about my HD, and the BSODs? Thanks for all your help.

Seagate 120GB SATA
Corsair 512MB XMS (2 Sticks=1024)

memtest results? prime95? GPU temps? Voltages? That may help us help you. The memtest should determine if you have a memory issue. When you say push the comp what exactly are you referring too? Remember, I least I am almost positive, the ASUS K8V SE Deluxe doesn't have an agp/pci lock so how you push your computer is important to know. Are you raising the HTT without using a memory divider? How high are you pushing the HTT and are you lowering the HTT multiplier when you do?

sorry if i wasn't clear-i don't overclock my cpu, just my graphics card which is only slightly overclocked. don't have a temp diode in my 9800 so i can't give u a gpu temp. umm i don't play with the voltages or teh clock speed of the cpu. However i am now running amd cool n quiet which seemed to help a little. Oh, when i refer to pushing the comp that means just having a bunch of apps open-game, outlook, mozilla, etc.

I would run memtest and prime95 torture test to determine if the cpu and/or memory is causing the problem just to eliminate them as the possible culprits. The amound of programs you have open should not result in BSOD UNLESS you have a bad memory stick.

Next I would run 3dmark 03 on multiple loops at default speeds on the 9800pro and see what happens. Then I would run it at the overclock amounts and see what happens. If it BSOD on the overclock then you probably have found your culprit.

If it fails memtest you probably have found your culprit

Two things:

-did you re-flash the BIOS? What do you mean by a "bad flash"? Typically a bad flash will leave your motherboard inoperable.

-from the sounds of it, your videocard is the culprit. It appears the guy who put the silencer on it for you didn't know what he was doing. Check your other components as michaelpatrick suggested, but in all likelihood you'll probably have to put the stock cooling back on the 9800, or else properly install the silencer.

I'm just basing this off of the circumstances you told us about in your first post. It's gotta be either the motherboard or the graphics card. I'm thinking graphics ATM.

I had a horrible experience with my first k8v -- similar problems, repeatedly froze on post, I tried to update the BIOS and it froze during the update, then the bootblock didn't work. Seriously, a fvcked up board. I had to RMA it, but thankfully they took it for all the trouble I had with it. The second board is working like a charm.

Counting both K8v's that's 2/3 Asus boards that I've had a horrible time with. Next board is going to be another brand. I don't undersasnd why people like ASUS so much :|:|

I NEVER had as much trouble with the 4 abit's I've had in the same time frame. the only thing an ABIT board ever did to me was lose a chipset fan.

bad flash=me using asus update, it saying updated and not booting to windows. sickbeast if it was installed incorrectly how would it be working so well-i can overclock past xt speeds, and no artifacts? Also can anyone help me with my hard drive woes? Cuz I tried being a good boy and update my bios and i really fvcek myself good by losing all my data...if it ain't broke don't fix it?

Hmmm...if it overclocks well then maybe the GFX card isn't the culprit.

When you flash your motherboard BIOS it can alter all sorts of stuff, and can make Windows unbootable quite easily. I would suggest booting up in Safe Mode, uninstalling all of your chipset drivers, reboot, install the latest chipset drivers, then reboot again.

If you think that sounds like trouble, just do a clean XP install; it should take 15 minutes or less on an A64.

Also be careful because your memory timings and such may not work quite the same as before. I would back off of runing tight memory timings for the time being, if you even are.

Does that motherboard use a VIA chipset? I owned a VIA chipset once (KT133) and will never buy another one. nVidia has never given me problems, and neither has intel.

not OC'ing memory, and yes it has a VIA chipset-K8T800. Umm, the crashes have seem to gone now, but what should I do...Windows thinks I have a raid array, but I don't. Could this affect overall system performance in any way or leave it as be?

What's giving you that impression? You have a SATA RAID controller, so I'm sure Windows recognizes that and has a driver for it. You can run a non-RAIDed hard drive on a RAID controller without issues; it just depends on how you format and partition the drive(s).

It should be under "SCSI and RAID Controllers", not "?". You probably just need new drivers for it. Go to your motherboard manufacturer's website and look for the latest drivers for the RAID controller; they're probably not included in the chipset drivers.

Hmmm...I did a google on the specific info that I got when I BSODed- error in smwdm.sys....damn it was a soundmax audio driver error. I'll see if this is the true solutionto my problem-thanks for the infor though sickbeast
