Major Athlon 64 X2 4200+ problem is Fixed

I installed a 4200 X2 tonight, and at stock, after Windows says that it updated some driver, it will not even boot into Windows. I am running prime95 right now, and no failures yet, but really, when has an AMD ever been shipped that does not do stock? Please help because BF2 is calling...

err, how are you running prime95 if it won't boot in to windows? Do you have service pack 2? Did you change anything other than the CPU? Did you make sure you had a BIOS version that supports the X2? Have you tried doing a repair install?

I am in safe mode, I am downloading SP2 again now, no, I did not change anything else, yes, I have the DFI nF4 board and the 723 BIOS, I will repair if this SP2 install doesn't work. I even got the latest X2 driver from AMD's website.

No good, back in safe mode. At least the windows boot screen showed for, oh, app 1 sec this time. Any ideas? Help is like so much appreciated.

As this is a new installation, I would format and reinstall.

Make sure you disable automatic update when you do get booted up.
And make sure you are not connected to the internet till your firewall is fully op.
And make sure your firewall is fully op after you have installed sp2/patches/chipset/vga etc etc.
One last thing, download all the updated drivers for your board so you don't have to get them from the internet (oops, have you got a mate with an interspack connection nearby who will lend his system for 20 minutes?)

If you installed the X2 driver before SP2 thats probably part of the problem, since the driver requires SP2..try a repair install, if that doesn't work, do a fresh install, but install SP2 prior to the X2 driver..

Well, I am up again after a system restore, and am installing SP2 again, and this time I will do AMD's driver afterwards. At least because Windows boots fine in safe mode and after a system restore, this is definitely a driver problem.

Oh, and by the way, this is not a new install, it is like a year old. I am now rebooting after a system restore, then SP2 update, then sound card update, then graphics update, then AMD update. If this is wrong, I will know, but someone should tell me what to do different.

Will it make any difference if I do these all one after another without rebooting, or will I have to reboot after each? Also, if I do reboot, I will have to reboot in safe mode, and that means that no drivers will ever actually loaded until I finish with everything.

You would need to reboot after SP2, and some of the patches (although mostly I don't and don't have probs that way).
I think the AMD you need to reboot and the chipset, definitely, as with the vga.

Prob best to create a system restore point as soon as you finish installing - something to fall back on.

Clean out the drivers anyway (except for the nvatabus for IDE), maybe, just maybe you will be lucky punk.

For a while, I couldn't even boot into safe mode. That's why I haven't been on for a while. I finally found out how to run checkdisk within the recovery console, but I want to know how to do a recovery, as in reinstalling all of Windows, hopefully without having to revalidate it. I should probably say that this happened, I now think, because a bad stick of RAM. Even at stock, it was unable to stay stable, and I was dumb enough to keep using it. Any help is much appreciated, and the help so far has been great.

Um, I thought that I did that, and it gave me some command prompt thing. Does it make any difference that I have XP Pro? Also, is this the thing where you have to press F2, or is it just like installing Windows until you get a repair option?

Well, I just noticed another thing about safe mode. It does not show any processors in device manager, and this means that all these times I have tried to install the AMD driver within safe mode haven't done anything, even though Windows says it has installed software. So since I only have one shot at windows after a system restore before it refuses to boot and I have to do safe mode, I'll try the AMD driver then, though it will mess up the order you gave me, montag451. By the way, is this like a family name or something, because it is a bit random. No offense, just wondering.

Montag is from Fahrenheit 451.

If you try rebooting from the CD, when it gives the first option to repair the installation, don't use that, use the second option.
I think, but not sure, that it is ok to do the AMD driver when the os is installed, but out of preference, I see the SP2 and other patches as part of the OS, rather that addons. Some ppl don't.

Well, after putting my old Winnie 3000 in, the repair finally worked. For a while, because the installation will not start in safe mode, I had no functioning windows at all. By the way, in repair, if a file will not load, try taking the cd out, put it back in, then immediately press enter for retry. It was the only way that driver.cab ever got copied. Hopefully, this will be my last help me post in this thread, because I have now realized that it always crashed before bootskins, which shows a different boot screen. I will unload it, then hopefully the upgrade will work. Thanks to everyone, but especially montag451. You were great, and helped a bunch. One word of advice to everyone, never use anything that will modify the boot during a hardware upgrade, even if it is just changing the screen. I will know shortly if that really was the only problem, because I tried the restore windows directory, and it repaired a lot of corrupted files. I am not expecting anymore screwups. Thanks again.

Well, it finally is up and running with the X2 (though I presently only have 512 MB of RAM, and 430 is used in system tasks and programs, so it is wayyy slow). Again, thanks to everyone and montag, and this thread is now dead.
