The effort, spearheaded by various right-wing "Christian" groups failed miserably.

I guess all those "Christian" "Family" groups just couldn't stir up enough fear.

This is a bad sign for the Bush agenda.

the irony is that by the time 'gay rights' (anti-discrimination) laws get passed in a partiuclar area, the laws are probably not so much needed in that area. Anti-discrimination laws would be much more useful in Texas, than Maine, I'd guess. ;)

One state at a time. Obviously, with crooks like Delay trying to cement their powerbase through illegal acts, it's gonna be harder to take Tejas.
You do know that both of Maine's Senators are Republican, right?

It's just amazing how clueless those who oppose anti-discrimination laws are. Here's a quote from the article from some bozo who voted for repeal:

"I genuinely feel that we should not give anyone special rights."

Leave it to the religious right to perceive laws barring discrimination of a group as equivalent to granting special rights to that group.

From Arsbanned-

"You do know that both of Maine's Senators are Republican, right?"

Only marginally Republican by current standards- they don't pander to the fringe-whacks...

Which is why I vote for them every time. The Moderates are the only thing saving this country from absolute destruction.

Yeah, they were trying to push the ol' "Preserve Marriage!" "Save the children" crap as usual but it failed.
I can't understand how state sanctioned discrimination=the preservation of marriage. Does not compute. :p
