mainboard squeals when powered on

the onboard speaker buzzes loudly

is this likely to be the board having trouble supporting the geforce, or the psu having trouble supporting everything?

Sometimes, the external power connectors are not plugged in. My old 9800Pro would emit a gawd awful squeal if you forgot to plug in the auxilery power to the card. If you PSU is too weak it coudl also not be feeding the card properly. Please list your system specs for us all to see.
 
ok...

so i actually _didn't see_ the 12 v socket on the card, waiting for a plug to be connected...

..the socket is black plastic, and it's in a dark corner of the room...ok!!? and no pcb has ever moved that fast from the letterbox to the computer 🙂
