mainboard or memory broken, or both?

Yesterday when i was shutting down my main pc i heared a number of short bleeps continuesly.
When i tried to restart the machine i only saw the startupscreen and no bootup was followed, it just froze. A weird repeating noise was also heared.
After a few retries (with all devices disconnected) I got a black screen.

I switched my video card from my main pc to my secondairy pc, and all worked fine.
When I switched the memory from the main pc to my secondairy pc, I couldnt start up anymore. The screen stayed black, though i did hear my hardisk starting up.
When I put back in my old memory in the secondairy pc screen kept on staying black.

My question is: Can faulty memory (crucial ballistic pc3200 2x512mb in this case) be the cause of killing off a main board?

both video cards are AGP, i don't have a old pci video card to test whether the agp port was killed.
