Hi. I am building a PC for an office environment and basically need a board that is rock solid- doesnt need to be good at graphics or anything, it basically just uses the internet, microsoft outlook, connects to an sql server and thats about it.

I want it to have integrated VGA to save money.

I wanna go with Asus or Gigabyte.

Can someone give me advice on what board i should get? What chipset is the best for this?

Also.. what cpu or memorry would you marry up with these? Dual core..... probably 2.6..

Any advice would be great. Just need a cheap board that would do the job very well. Many thanks

GIGABYTE GA-MA74GM-S2H AM2+/AM2 AMD 740G HDMI Micro ATX $75
2×240pin DDR2 800, 1 x PCI Express 2.0 x16, Realtek ALC888, 1 x PATA, 6 x SATA, 4 x USB 2 (8 more onboard)

or you could step back one chipset ...

GIGABYTE GA-MA69VM-S2 AM2 AMD 690V Micro ATX $72
4×240pin DDR2 800, 1 x PCI Express1 x16, Realtek ALC888, 1 x PATA, 4 x SATA, 4 x USB 2 (6 more onboard)

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400+ 2.8GHz Brisbane Socket AM2 65W $78
an x2 5000BE is $10 more

Kingston ValueRAM 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 $47
on Gigabyte QVL

Do you need a HSF for the cpu?

yes i will be needing a HSF. I was told that Intel these days are the best value for money, perform better and are a lot cooler than the AMD these days. Do you suggest I go for a AMD system do you?

Many thanks

From that same site, I would be getting this the AMD 7 series IGP's are the best on the market atm- the 780G is built on 55nm so I would assume the 740G is aswell (runs cooler and less power consumption). For the tasks you require you will be able to find a multitude of cheap AM2 CPU's that will perform admirably.

im also going to get a x2 6000+ as the price difference between these is very little.

with memory...will this memory do the job well? im thinking of getting 4gb, or do you think 2gb will be plenty, and just add more if necessary?

thanks

For the extra $7 I'd go with the GA-MA78GM-S2H
HT 3.0, PCIe 2.0 x16, Realtek ALC889A, 1 x IEEE 1394a, 1 eSATA (6 total), 4×240pin (up to 16GB DDR2 1066), D-Sub + DVI and 1 x HDMI

The Athlon 64 X2 (AM2) 5200+ Brisbane 65w would save you $60 - and alot of electricity 🙂

2gb of ram will suit you well - more is always helpful in serious multitasking. Here is the Gigabyte QVL list for the 7xx series chipsets ...

300 extra MHz and 1mb l2 cache (not considering the electric bill) is not really worth it in my mind when you consider the 6000+ versus the 5200+ (and the 50% more in cost)

The 6000+ must be "hot" down there in Ozzie Land. From that website you could buy a Phenom for only $20 more (don't really think you need a quad unless you get into some video work) ...

edit: You may want to email that website and see when the X2 5800+ will be available. It's the Brisbane variety of the 6000+ (with less cache and half the wattage) and should be coming out this month ...

Just make sure you don't get the GA-MA78GM-S2H to use with AMD 125 watt processors, as it has been shown to have problems with those high wattage chips..

That board would be great with 5000 x2 BLACK w/ a good heatsink/fan..
the newer phenom X4 9750 & X4 9850 are 125 watt & tear up those motherboards who aren't built for the stress of 125 watt !!

Build & Enjoy Let us know what ya do !! OL'PAL GARY
