Mainboard+CPU+DDR package?

Now that I've decided to get a MSI..Pro-2RU mainboard, Athlon XP, with 256k of 2100 RAM, the question is where to get it. I see on many vendor's sites that they have packages where the stuff is all put together and "tested". Is there any advantage or disavdvantage to this, over buying the separates, for an advanced intermediate newbie? Also, I see newegg.com mentioned here; are there any other reliable vendors that you guys deal with? Thanks, and happy new year.

newegg is good. before newegg started its business, I alway purchased from axiontech. for cooling gears, 2cooltek is one of the best. one of the advantages of buying the "packed" deal is you may save a few dollars over purchasing them separately (but if they say the setup was tested, it usually is more expensive than "non-tested" setup as it implies that they guarantee a hassle-free installation).

Going the assembed mobo-cpu route, I recommend monarchcomputer.com - they not only assemble and test, they give you a 3-year warranty. 😉
I've never come across any other outfit that guarantees their assembled mobo combo for 3-years !

Thanks, and I'll check out the sites you mentioned.
BTW-- It's already tomorrow on the other side of the world from me (central usa), and darn near next year too!

Yeah.. Newegg seems to be a good solid place to purchase.

Many Anandtech'rs buy there. My brother just bought a Soyo Dragon + Mobo, Athlon 1700 CPU and SK6 Heatsink from them.. Great prices!

Oh and no sales tax if you live outside of CA.

I bought everything I needed for my upgrade from Newegg (board, cpu, cooler, memory) in one order.

I could have ordered individual components a llittle cheaper, but the savings in shipping beat any other combination.

Highly recommended.

I have purchased many of my components at Multivwave.

They have good prices (I don't think they're quite as cheap as Newegg) and will sell you an assembled and tested bundle if that's what you're looking for.

They also have reasonable shipping rates.

Newegg and Mwave are both excellent for buying separate parts (mobo/cpu, etc.) and assembling it all yourself. Camion was asking about outfits that will mount the CPU and HSF, on the mobo and test it out. That's why I recommended monarchcomputer.com as the place to go if he would feel more comfortable having knowledgeable techs do it for him and guaranty the entire combo for 3-years!
