Main monitor going off, why?

This is about the 3rd time it happens. For no apparent reason my main monitor goes off on its own. I don't know if the following was a coincidence or it actually had something to do with it, but it happened just when I click the Save button in 3DSmax7. The funny thing is that it does have power, everything else is fine: the computer itself is still working (I am typing this in the second monitor). I already turned it off and back on, but it's still black, as if not getting any signal from the video card. So I guess the problem is the video card. What do you think?

My sepcs:
AMD Athlon XP (1.5Ghz) - can't recall the model num.
1Gb ram
WinXP Pro, sp2
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 128ram

Thanks guys,

J.

Is the monitor powering off or is it going into sleep mode? Big difference, if it's going into sleep mode, it's likely that either the connector on the monitor is bad, you have a bad monitor cable or you have a bad video card. If the monitor is powering off then something is faulty with the monitor.
