Other than the 64mb video (T43) vs. 32mb (T42P) and the faster cpu, are there any other core differences?

With the different chipsets, they T43's run dual channel RAM and PCI-E video. T43's consume a bit more power but compensate for a higher capacity 6-cell battery.

When you say T42P's only have 32mb of video memory, I think a little extra research is in order on IBM.com or thinkpads.com.

T42 & T43 Reviews

T42: 400MHz FSB, DDR333 RAM, AGP graphics (Radeon 7500/9000 32MB, 9600 64MB, FireGL T2 128MB)

T43: 533MHz FSB, DDR2 533 RAM, PCI-E graphics (GMA900 integrated, Radeon X300 64MB, FireGL V3200(?) 128MB), higher heat generation, higher power consumption, slightly larger battery capacities

heat? i don't like heat... :-( After owning a Fujitsu lifebook (2.44 ghz P4), i hate heat..... this laptop generates enough heat to leave a small burn mark on the table.

I have a T42p with the 128MB FireGL T2 (which is itself based on the 9600 IIRC). It's not a bad machine but you might want to stay away from the 14.1" display. Word on the forum here is that the 15" panel has a wider viewing angle.

It's interesting that 2GHz P-M in the Thinkpad crunches numbers about 3x faster than the 1.4GHz Athlon I have at home.

I've not used a 14" T42, but the 14" T43's are pretty decent. I hear the 14" T42's are okay, but the brightness isn't the best and viewing angles could be better. If you get a 15", make sure you go SXGA+ or UXGA to get the Flexview screen; otherwise you'll get the same type screen as a 14". T42's are still a better buy than T43's, offer 90% of the same performance, and get better battery life.

And a 2GHz P-M will destroy an old TBird Athlon. They aren't too different in terms of architecture, but the P-M is immeasureably more efficient. Great CPU
(But old Athlons were great in their time :))

The T42p has the 128 meg Fire GL T2... THe T43P has the the ATI V3200 (follow on to Fire GL T2)....

SO the T42P offers better performance than the plain T43.

I've had the P models in the 14"... they are nice screens.... I notice no real difference between that and the 15" I have now in my new T43.

As far as viewing angle????? Who freaking cares? how are you using your laptop that you are concerned about viewing angles?
