Mailing small packages

Can you just dump small packages (something a little bigger than the size of a CD case) that have the Print+Ship labels into a mailbox? Or do non-letters always have to be picked up by the mailman / brought to the post office?

These mail pieces must be taken to your nearest USPS retail unit or may be given to your carrier if you are a known customer to him/her and have included your return address.

the same applies to international mail

small first class "packages" are ok
