Mailbox util for OS X?

I am in need of a program for 10.5 to search through old mailbox files. I am trying to find old emails from certain people back several years and importing them into Mail.app is confusing because they just get labeled "Import". Is there a specific tool for OS X that reads old mailbox files? Thanks. Some of them are thunderbird mailbox files also, if that helps.
