Mail server software

In simple terms, I need to setup a cheap or free mail server.

I have the domain already and already run the web site on another server in my house. I have a server sitting here doing nothing and wish to turn it into a mail server. Right now my web site, the message board all use gmail for communication and I wish to move away from that.

At the moment I am looking for anyone who has setup a cheap or free email server and how it went and any advice they can give.

I use the free version of MailEnable. It's stable, somewhat intuitive to learn, and it doesn't freeze up the way Argosoft does.

I might play with this later on. Looks to be a good suite and easy to configure. One of these days I'll figure out IIS and maybe I can have a web based interface.

I know a company running this and they love it.

Did you check the price before you posted that link?

Cheap for me would be <$50. I prefer free though.

Apparently you have not priced Exchange lately.

Good at Linux?

Squirrel mail

Squirrel Mail's just a web front end, you still need a SMTP and IMAP server behind it.

Yea I have priced Exchange and that's why I want something "cheap or free." Also I specified Windows, not Linux. Thanks for the help anyways.

Linux on the other hand.......I'm glad I saw this post. I wasn't looking for a Windows mail server, I was looking for one for Linux and Zimbra does the trick quite nicely. Too bad they charge for the version that comes with the Outlook connector.
