Mail application questions...

so I finally started using Mail instead of using the web browser, but I have a couple questions. I get my mail on my phone and sometimes via webmail still. When I delete from my phone or webmail it does not synchronize with Mail on my mac.. am I doing something wrong or is this not supported?

2nd question... can I put a password on the Mail application itself? Other people use my mac and I don't want them getting into my email... I know I can create seperate users, but I prefer to just lock the Mail app with a password... I'd actually like to do this with a few other apps as well... any ideas?

Thanks a million, this would be great if it worked the way I want it to

As far as the synchronization goes, you need to make sure that you have IMAP set up for your gmail account on Mail.

With the password thing, I really have no idea what to advise.

afaik, there isn't a way to password protect an app itself.

One option may be to create a password protected folder and stick the Mail.app inside: http://www.applematters.com/ar...sword-protected-folde/

Another option would be to hide the Mail.app (either by renaming it and changing the icon to something no one would open), or by hiding the app itself somewhere on your HD only you would know.

Damnit, aphex beat me to it. I think for what you want to do, creating a password-protected DMG with the Disk Utility is your best bet.

Only drawback to those ideas is that is sort of defeats the purpose for what most of us use desktop email clients for... always available access to our email. If he has to quit and then re-launch Mail everytime someone else uses his system, he might as well just have enable multi accounts and fast-user switching.

Well ideally he would create a separate, password-protected guest account for OSX for stuff like email, but it doesn't seem like he wants to do that...

I found mail.app to be very awkward for use with gmail. I eventually just ended up installing google notifier and using that to check my mail and launch a web browser for reading/writing. It also works great because it monitors my calendar too.

I wanted to use ical and mail.app, but it just was not a fluid experience. I still use mail.app for my other non google accounts. And it works great for those. However, I think i will be forwarding all of those to my google mail soon. So I will probably abandon mail.app.
