This year marks the auspicious time of the grand festival called the Kumbh Mela. The Sanskrit word 'kumbh' stands for "vessel' and the word 'mela' is loosely translated as 'festival'. The word "Maha" is a prefix in Sanskrit meaning "great" or "grand". The Kumbh Mela occurs every four (4) years and there is a "grand" festival every twelve (12) and even "grander" one every 144 years!
2013 marks the 144th year since the last Maha Kumbh Mela (1869) and the festival lasts for a total of 55 days! It is the largest gathering of humans in the history of the world; up to 100 MILLION people are expected attend from around the India and the world! There are four main places where the Maha Kumbh Mela take place:
1.) Nashik in MaharAshtrA - at the banks of the river GodAvarI
2.) Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh - an ancient kingdom at the banks of the river Shipra
3.) Haridwar in UttarAkhand - at the banks of the Ganga
4.) Prayag (now called Allahabad - renamed after mooslums invaded India) in Uttar Pradesh - This is where the "Sangam" is (confluence of three rivers; Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati)
The Kumbh Mela typifies Hinduism in that it is not an 'organized' event by any sense of the word; millions of people, literally, of all walks of life, professions, and predispositions come of their own accord for various reasons. The string that binds them together is faith in Hindu Dharma. Without any "organization" overseeing the event, such large numbers of people gather and disperse naturally.
Some basic pointers on the Kumbh Mela this year:
1.) 100 million people expected to attend
2.) 55 days is the duration of the festival
3.) The whole festival occurs in a space of 20 sqkm.
The main attraction during the Kumbh, as it is called, is the ritual bathing in the rivers to cleanse oneself of pAp or "sin". The zombie worshiping untouchables (christians), stole this ritual, as they did with many others from various religions.
The diversity that is India is present in the Maha Kumbh Mela where people who speak different languages, live different lifestyles, work in different professions, gather peacefully and pray devoutly without creating hullabaloo. Of course, with such large crowds, accidents are bound to occur and with India's eminent infrastructure (my ass), people sometimes do get hurt (stampedes sometimes occur with some getting gravely injured or worse).
The faith, devotion, and spirit that is present in India and Hindus can be seen nowhere else in the world. The natural coming together of so many different kinds of people without conflict is a miracle in and of itself. Mlecchas (untouchables) from outside India marvel at the sight of so many people gathered through their own will that it boggles their mind. A herd of animals from Harvard are visiting this year's Kumbh Mela to "study" how such a large gathering of people can occur and yet remain so peaceful. To these barbarians, who have done nothing but destroy, loot, and murder, peaceful gatherings are an enigma.
The non-Hindus are so biased that any "news" of the Kumbh Mela outside of India is always tied with some negative news; stampedes, missing people, etc. What else can one expect from untouchables? And that too ones that worship a charlatan zombie?
