Is it possible to make a firearm that shoots bullets propelled by magnetic forces? Seems plausible to me, and would be very interesting to think of a completely silent gun and how it could be utilized for US troops, etc.

Railguns ftw. The problem is scaling one down enough in real life (outside of Quake 3).

Yes. Of course that's possible. ^_^

Subsonic rounds are readily available and very quiet when fired from closed actions. From my lever action 22, subsonic rounds are very quiet. An airgun is much louder. I can fire the 22 rounds in the city, unnoticed.

wouldn't you basically need to connect it to a coal-fired power plant? and wouldn't the magnetic fields pull all the blood cells in your body towards the rifle?

First question - depends on how much energy you want. The USN seems to think they can power a pretty big railgun off of a small (compared to a coal plant) engine.

Second question - no. People survive NMR scans pretty regularly.

A rail gun or coil gun could do. Ever wrap a bunch of wire around a plastic pipe, put something metal near it and then apply current? The metal part will get sucked right in. If you put a magnet it would shoot out if the poles are right. Would probably need a bunch of big capacitors so you can give it a really nice jolt of power.

I wonder if they can also make screwdrivers with magnets... would be very interesting for it to automatically hold the screw in place so I can get into areas I can't reach. :colbert:
