Magnet's effect on CRT Monitor when it's turned off?

Hey guys, I had a question. My buddy came and picked up my 19 inch crt from me at school and took it home. However he left it in the front seat of his car (about a foot away from his subwoofer / speaker). I am worried that this subwoofer magnet messed up my monitor. Does a magnet have the same effect on a monitor that is shut off? You guys think the subwoofer magnet is strong enough to mess with a monitor? Thanks.

degaussing will fix almost any magnet issue. i doubt it will be very serious.

Not to be pessimistic, but I had a 17" flatscreen crt ruined by someone wearing a magnetic bracelet pointing to something on the screen. There is a big (2" X 6") area that has distorted color. Even many degaussings have not fixed it.

Oh i forgot to mentioned. The front of the monitor was inside a huge black hooded sweatshirt. I put the monitor in there to protect the face. Don't know if that'd change anything. Thanks for the replies.

my sister got a toy from mcdonalds and was holding it next to the screen pointing and it had a magnet i just told her to get it away from the monitor and i never had any problems but i doubt a speaker will cause damage almost like there isnt a magnet in there try to hold ur speaker up to monitor doubt it will blur or anything.

Some speakers are shielded, some aren't and I know from experience an unshielded speaker will probably trash a CRT to the point it won't ever be right again. I had some nice sounding bookshelf speakers that I was going to use on my PC, but they weren't shielded, and if placed within a foot or so, would seriously mess up the image. I saw it distort, so I didn't hurt anything.

My "trashing" came about when I got a new desk and had everything taken apart to set it up. I put the monitor on the floor, next to a speaker I used on one of my radios. I just forgot about it. About an hour later, I fire the PC up and there's a swirl almost dead center on the monitor. I hit the degauss about 100+ times and it wasn't doing anything.
I put it in the closet, and went to Best Buy for a new one. Later on, I used the messed up monitor for testing and it was still there, exactly the same. So, out it went on unlimited pickup and one of the trash pickers snatched it up in a few minutes.

If the built in degausser doesnt work most TV repair shops, probably PC rapair shops too, have more powerful deqaussers.

I doubt that would have distorted it, but if it has it's probably not a huge problem. Any decent computer/tv repair shop should have a degaussing wand.

I bought myself one after leaving a rare-earth-magnet torch sitting on top of my tv for a couple of days. The whole top to the screen was purple and green after that. But 10 seconds with a degaussing wand and it was as good as new. Just be careful with a wand if you use it yourself, because they can destroy watches and mobile phones if you let them get too close.

Did you bother to hook it up and see for yourself if it is ok or not? Seems to be a better plan than all this speculation.....

I doubt it will be hurt if it's powered off. When I've seen monitors magnetically stained like that often the stain will fade after being left on for a while (even if the degauser fails to get rid of it.)

I like SkyBum's suggestion - turn it on and see.
