So for those of you who keep up with my threads, I am making a cryptex right now, like from Da Vinci code. I bought some magnets from unitednuclear last night, some 1/4 x 1/4 NeFeB and some 1/8x3/8 ones. Basically, I was wondering if the 1/4 x 1/4 has the strength to push the smaller one down when it is attached to a very weak spring. How to I calculate the force the fixed (larger) magnet applies to the smaller (spring loaded) magnet?
They are both cylindrical, did I chose the right shape for this? How does thickness affect a magnets field and strength?


They are N40 magnets is that means anything to you guys.

This may answer your question regarding how to calculate the force exerted between two magnets. Although the calculation provided is for bar magnets and not cylindrical magnets, it is likely that it will be reasonably accurate in your case because most bar magnets and cylinder magnets are dipole magnets.

As for your comment about the "N" grade of your magnet, see this site

While I could explain how to calculate the field strength of a cylindrical magnet, the math is a bit complex and I'm not sure you really even want/need to know that much detail. Just use the calculator at this site
