Hey guys,

I'm trying to make a floating box of sorts. I want to put several magnets on the bottom and then then some on the bottom of a box to "float" it.

I was thinking of holding about 10-15 kilos with about 2-3 cm of separation between the faces of the magnets.

I was looking on united nuclear at some 2 in diameter 1/4 in high disk magnets. You think 10 of those (2 sets of 5) is sufficient or could I use even smaller ones.

If you can provide me some formulas for force derived from opposing poles and carrying capacity that would be great.

Another thing, I was looking at shielding. Would sheet nickel really shield magnetic fields, I found some web sites but I wasn't sure or how well it would work.

While I could explain how to calculate the field strength of a cylindrical magnet, the math is a bit complex and I'm not sure you really even want/need to know that much detail. Just use the calculator at this site

The site is still operational, but for some reason the link only works for a short time. Just go to www.dextermag.com, click the tools tab, tand then the magentic calculator button. It will take you to the right page. I don;t know why a direct link won;t work.
