I bought this map:
76xIJ.jpg

Info:
Colour: Colour is graded through continents and countries, to remove the abrupt borderlines of more traditional designs.

Printing: The map is printed using a lithographic printing process onto a coated, silk-finish paper, with special colours, including silver metallic for the seas. The print is finished with a sealer, to protect the inks, and a gloss UV varnish is applied to the landmasses – for contrast.

Details: Country boundaries, capital and major cities, rivers, highest peaks, sea depths, North/South Pole projections and a shaded physical relief layer.

Paper dimensions: 22" wide

The plans is to have it framed with sort of magnetic back that way she can put a small magnet marking where she wants to travel.

What should I put behind the map? I don't want to spend a ton on this so the cheaper the better.

Thanks for the help!

I'm a big fan of maps and own quite a few. I honestly have NEVER seen a map where the colors didn't mean something. On some level it's very disturbing almost as if it's being treated as an 'art piece.'

product fail. i was trying to figure out how you could make a paint magnetic until i realize they have no idea what the fuck they're talking about.

that would be 'ferrous paint.' but yeah, that's a good idea, if it's strong enough.

That's a larger version. Tell us more about your map collection. Have anything cool? What are your sources?

I've got maps from all kinds of sources. I've always enjoyed maps and have collected them over the years from old U.S. maps showing the territories to city maps. I've got old Railroad maps, London maps from the turn of the century, WWII "front maps", Vietnam mission maps, forest service topo maps and, medieval maps. National Geographic has had some pretty good maps over the years. Mostly, I just pick them up as I see them if it's well done and has interesting details. One of these lifetimes, when I have a formal library, I'll have to put them on display.
