Magnetic air movers?

I saw on a commercial (don't ask me why I actually watched it, I was bored ok?!) about an air filter that uses no fans. It's suppose to charge air particles and move them through the filter through an electric charge. This is an interesting idea and if it were used to move air through a PC case, that would mean a very silent PC. I was wondering if any "fans" actually did this.

Well considering that computers dont take to kindly to Magnets of any form I would think that you would have some problems.... I could be totally wrong but this just seems to be a glaring flaw. :)

the air still makes noise, and i think that ys-tech is making a fan that uses magnets to move the fan blades...

Yes, they are. But as far as I know conventional fans are also driven by magnetics(right?).

As long as these air movers weren't really magnetically powerful it should work OK.

The commercial you saw was the ionic breeze air purifier... it circulates air by positively charging incoming molecules and having a negatively charged plate(s) on the other side. The air that comes out is actually colder than the air it sucks in...

I have one of those, but air circulation is very weak for something that's 2 feet tall. I have to admit though, the thing makes ABSOLUTELY NO SOUND AT ALL and the stuff that gets attracted to the plates are goo.

I looked into this. They also create ozone which is poisionous. I read the most relavent patent, and the guys design claims to reduce the ozone output, I dont know if a do it yourselfer would be able to reproduce his setup though. The sharper image licences that patent for their ionic breeze. Nobody seemed to think I would get enough airflow when i asked about it. Also having a few kV of potential near your computer is asking for trouble. I am still going to try to do some testing with it, but thats down the road a bit. I took apart an old monitor and might try to use the transformer to get some big voltage, but I dont have anything suitable to measure any results with yet.

I dont know what to use to actually ionize the air.

sharper image should be ashamed of itself for promoting a pos that creates poison as a bonus. not to mention that the pos doesn't work well at all. the latest consumer reports did a test on air filters, and ionic breeze came out dead last. obviously because i moves so little air.
