Okay, I have a need to use magnets to temporarily hang something from the underside a steel deck. My question is this: Is there any way to determine how many magnets of a given size or strength I need to hold up said object? I'm going to have to order them online, so I'm wanting make sure I get enough. Is the "pull force" the amount of weight a magnet can support before detaching?

Your thoughts?

well, It's not that easy. I need to buy some block or disc magnets and epoxy them to a piece of sheet metal I am using. So I need to buy them loose in bulk.

yeah, that was the table I saw, but how does "pull force" relate to the magnet's holding capacity. Surely those little tiny magnets can't hold the full amount of weight listed....can they?

Yes, pull force = tensile holding force. These are not cheap magnet's, these can break bones if you get a finger stuck between them.

Anytime I need to order magnets in bulk I just get an alternator sized box of them. 5-10 pounds should be what you need to support whatever you're hanging.
 
The funny part is I just did something like this...

I had five old hard drives that had died but for whatever erason was left in my closet. Inside each one were two magnetic plates with shielding on one side. The plate the magnets were on also already had holes that were used to mount the mangets to the drive. I used these to mounting holes to bolt them to a plastic shelf. The two that I got off one hard drive holds about 20-25lbs.
