Frankly, I like itunes. For me it ends up being pretty cheap since I get to hit up a lot of oldies for a few bucks now and then, and syncing them to the ipod is a no-brainer. That, paired up with yahoo music @ $5.00/month for stuff I just want to listen to once was enough for me...

The thing is, I have agreed with most of you that these mediums are flawed, all the while letting them catter to my lazyness.

Now I am not going to say that magnatune is the solution to every problem, but I just wanted to express how comforting it is to see something like this emerge.

While I only seem to like the jazz on the site, it's nice to see the potential that has been realized via the Creative Commons license.

While the whole "give three copies away" thing might doom them, the idea is quite innocent and seeign how it plays out will be interesting...

the premise:

you can listen to everythign on the site for free@ probably 128kbps, and then purchase the albumn for whatever price you feel is appropriate, from $5-18, or you can choose only a download. I thought it was neat that they let you have the downloaded version right after you buy the CD so you ddon't ahve to wait.

..and of all ways to discover something, I discovered it after verizon had throttled my ev-do bandwidth on my phone, I settled for surfing /., and there was this shill-sounding post all the way down there that no one had buried, on whose link I clicked....:p

Don't get me wrong, I am no shill. I have just settled for itunes, yahoo, and allofmp3 in the past, frankly, out of lethargy. itunes has led me to soem great tracks, but I find myself buy crap off of p.b.s, and, yes, even Prairie Home Companion:( They had this ragtime pianist that I thought was awesome:(

Unless this thing takes off, it probably might not have much of a future, but until then, if ever, its nice to see that someone has made what we all want....

<--gettign old:(

the /. psot:

If you would like to buy music from an online store, but you don't want DRM and you want top quality, check out magnatune.com [magnatune.com]. They let you download CD-quality (either as uncompressed wave files, or as FLAC), MP3, or Ogg Vorbis. And you can listen to everything before you buy. (128 kbps MP3, lower quality than you get when you pay.)

Not only do they not have DRM, but they encourage you to give away up to three copies of the music you buy, as a form of advertising.

They have a sliding scale on prices: you can choose what you want to pay, within a reasonable range. (I just checked, and at least for the album I checked, the range was from $5 to $18.) If you only like one song on an album, pay less for the album. If you really want to encourage an artist to make more albums, pay more. That's cool.

When you buy an album, the artist gets 50% of whatever you pay. Not 50% of the profits, and then they cook the books so they "don't have any profits"... 50% of the gross income. That's outstanding. I love their slogan: "We are not evil."

I have no connection to them, other than being a satisfied customer.

edit: I jsut bought an album, so the first three people to ask get a free copy in FLAC
