Magicka - Fun coop game

Couldn't get the demo to work. Posted on steam forums multiple times and did all the troubleshoot tips in the sticky. Shame cuz I was really interested in this game.

Played some single player and having a blast. So many skill combinations and some are pretty neat.

Decent interaction with the world you are in and a lot of certain touches that you would usually only see in a text/ASCII based RPG

ie. if you are wet and charge up Lightning abilities, you will take Lightning damage. You need to cast the Fire skill on yourself to dry yourself off.

I tried the demo last night, and I have to say this is the perfect spell system for a top down RPG game. I honestly had so much fun discovering new spell combinations that I forgot about completing the demo and just stayed in one area experimenting all night. A few of the better spell combos below:

Super Steam Lightning Beam: Arcane/Steam x2/Lightning x2

Blizzard Ball: Earth/Ice x4 (crazy amount of damage, no AOE)

Arcane Steam Ball: Earth/Arcane/Steam (good AOE damage)

Arcane Lightning Barrage: Ice x3/Lightning/Arcane (charge half way for a shotgun like spread)

Arcane Steam Lightning Nova (use with shift + right click): Arcane/Steam/Lightning/Arcane x2 (the extra arcane increases range, really high AOE damage that spreads from self)

That's just the tip of the iceberg, it's fun coming up with new combos and using them in interesting ways (imbuing your sword to lay down mines, or flaming rocks, etc.). I really loved the demo, but I'm not so sure I could pay $20 for the game. Maybe if there was an SDK that promised community mods and levels...

The game is 9.99..or 8 dollars if you use the D2Drive code.

How do you do the coop, is it everyone trying to share a keyboard?

I gave it a try and didn't even finish the demo, gonna pass on it. Despite the graphics, it ran a bit choppy for me and seemed really easy. The spells are neat, but not enough to save it for me.

I don't like the spell combos. I keep messing up or forgetting what sequence of buttons to press.

It's like those old arcade games... Street Fighter etc.

easy?

baaaahahahahahahaha!

it is choppy for me at times too. But its fun.

Do you guys have any cool tips/tricks/secrets you've found? Any cool coop combos? Or Spell combos. IE Water Resistance+Rain+Thunderbolt

I want to add them to my new tip site 😛

I couldn't get it to work on my Win XP x64. First time a game hasn't worked. Get through the title screen and when i try to start, it crashes to desktop. Some troubleshooting will start soon.

In Chapter 1, freeze the water to your East, just past the Moose, and you will find a book of 'Grease'. Be careful though, the ice will melt pretty quickly so just chain-cast cold.

You will notice a book on a ledge above you which seems inaccessible. You will actually come back here quite a bit later in the game but you can pick up this book in Chapter 1 if you're desperate and persistent. Use Fire + Shield and hold Shift to create mines on the floor. Walk over one and it can catapult you up onto the ledge. Requires a LOT of patience.

Not sure man. It could be a sound card issue.

Or you could try running it in windowed mode.
What worked for me was running the game in windowed mode (in Steam - right-click the game in the games list, go to Properties>Launch Options, and type "-window" without the quotes, in the box that appears).

Thanks for the Tip Elcs. I actually heard you could get the book on the tower early but I didn't know how to do it.

Here's a tip for chapter 2. (hidden weapon)
You can find the master sword if you travel up one of the rivers by freezing it.

I looked at a bit of the video.

I'm not sure I like satire in my RPG, but it looked like it was in the intro, not the gameplay.

The gameplay looked sort of budget RPG, generic, with more options for spells.

Not sure if it's good to get for solo play for an RPG? I've already got a big backlog of 'casual RPG's' if i want to play them - Fate, Torchlight, etc.

I do like to patronize indie RPG's - just got the Geneforge collection, on sale (still very expensive at $90 w/guides, not sure that was a good idea).

Arx Fatalis, Divine Divinity, Titan's Quest, etc. Had them for years most of them barely started.

I just picked it up dl/ing now. Need to convince some of my friends to get it haha. I can see it would be much more fun co-op from the demo.

I picked it up for my fiancée and I. We played for about an hour... at first I thought it was too comical and fairly stupid, but as you get into it, it's a TON of fun.

Some of the simple spell combos are fairly useless. For example, I can hurl a fireball at things, OR I can hurl some kind of arcane ball instead! Both do virtually the same thing, just one has a burn effect. I can drop mines (they look like eggs) that heal me, or I can just heal myself.

However, some of the more complex spell combos are very rewarding and well worth the time experimenting. Experimenting with various combinations and seeing what happens is half the fun! In addition, the game has a number of minor secrets that encourage you to explore and think outside the box rather than just trudging through to the end. One of the most key features to the game is that you can do friendly fire damage (including to yourself). That means that you can't simply run around spamming spells to blow everything on the screen up, because chances are, you and your friends will be dead too.

So far, for $10, I give it a 9/10. Very fun game, and well worth the money. I haven't been to the end yet, so I can't say how long the game is. The way it's going, I hope it's at least 4-5 hours long.
