Magician was unable to find a Samsung SSD

So I got my new Samsung 840 pro today, and decided I would first update the firmware on it before I installed windows on it. I plugged it in via external usb drive and windows detected it, I formatted and created a partition (probably not necessary) then I ran Samsung Magician.

It scanned and said: Magician was unable to find a Samsung SSD connected to your system. Some Magician functions may not work correctly.

Wtf? In the dropdown menu on top I see all my drives including "Samsung SSD 840 Series USB Device" - is this a retarded magician?

Did you install Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver prior?

I had issues with updating firmware and authenticating the drive in Magician until I uninstalled IRST. Then after I authenticated and updated firmware, I reinstalled IRST.

Hmm, now I am confused. This IRST driver appears to be for RAID setups, no? It also says for AHCI but according to Intel's readme I am not in AHCI mode because I do not see a "Intel(R) SATA AHCI controller" entry in my device manager... so now what?

Instead I have "Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller"

And if I try to update driver and point to the folder I unzipped the intel files windows says my driver is up to date and doesnt offer the intel ones

Think most people use IRST regardless if they're using RAID or not. Seems to give a boost in performance. Gives my Samsung EVO several percentage points higher in Write speeds.

As far as the rest, not real sure. What motherboard do you have?

You may have to plug it up via SATA cable instead of USB. Just something to try.

I would connect the SSD to a SATA port from the motherboard to update it's firmware, not in an USB external enclosure.

OK I will try and plug it in internally, thanks!

The mobo is ASUS P6X58D

Yup I needed to connect it directly to the mobo now magician sees it. Thanks again!

I had the same issue with magician even though other utilities could see the drive in the usb dock.

Ditto. IRST doesn't recognize any of my external USB drives.

Magician is actually a pretty handy utility, I like it. Be careful with the automatic optimization settings, though... They jacked up my last install.

I use their settings however I use a battery backup otherwise if the power went out critical data could be lost.

Samsung Magic Software doesn't detect their own SSD's if you have the Intel Sata 6 Controller in BIOS set for Raid Mode - The Samsung Software only works if you enable the Sata Controller in ACHI Mode. - Samsung has to UpDate their Software.
