Magical new invisible DVD drive appeared in My Computer, not sure why...

EDIT: It turns out Alcohol 120% was the culprit. Since I don't use the software, I uninstalled it, and the magical drive went away. 🙂

Thanks for the assistance everyone.

Sorry I'm not at home to give the exact model, but WinXP Pro thinks now that I have a "AXP" dvd drive in my rig. I've never even heard of this brand. I think this all started a couple weeks ago. No major hardware changes, it just showed up. I did swap the IDE cables recently, so maybe that's messing it up, but the new dvd drive didn't appear right away after installing the new cables, it took a while.

I've tried removing the drive via Device Manager, but it comes right back. It also doesn't show up in the BIOS. Only in Windows. I've also attempted to "Eject" the drive, but nothing ejects on my main dvd burner, so it doesn't seem that Windows is confused about my actual drive.

I'm thinking now maybe I can "disable" this drive in Device Manager and see what happens.

Anyway, anyone else ever have something like this happen? What did you do?

My specs:
Biostar M7NCG 400 nForce2 mobo
Promise FastTrakTX2 raid controller w/ 2 80gb drives in RAID 0 (main os partition)
1 120gb drive on primary master (storage)
1 8x BTC dvd burner on secondary master

well, you know a lot of newer cd burning software installs virtual drives so you can mount cd images and cds. have you installed any such software lately? i know alcohol 120% does it. hell, maybe you or someone installed daemon-tools.

Now you can play those invisible DVDs at last! 🙂

(sorry, couldn't resist. Interesting problem! 😀)

Actually, I did install Alcohol 120% trial version to burn a quick cd image that someone gave me. I totally didn't even think of that. I'll try making sure nothing related to it starts, or maybe even uninstall it completely.

Invisible DVDs? What invisible dvds. I don't see no invisible dvds.... 😉

Yeah, Alcohol 120% is probably your problem. By default it sets up that virtual drive.

I'd go ahead and disable it no matter what though. That virtual drives messes with many games out there. If you get error about inserting the disk, and it's in the drive, that's what's probably going on.

yea I heard UBI is setting up games to just not run if it detects any cd-burning software, and just crash, without any message like "you bad bad software pirate you uninstall daemon tools now!!!" but just a random message and unexplainable crash.
