Magical Mystery disappearing sounds?!

Win98SE, Fresh Install, ECS K7S5A mb using onboard sound, IE 5.5.
OK, when first booted, all Windows sound events, CD player and so on are fine and work well. Now, when connecting to the Internet all sounds are gone. And I mean just by attempting to connect they go away. I stopped the dialer once before it connected and the sounds were gone like before. I went through the Advance settings in IE under Tools/Internet Options/Advance. Made sure "play sounds" was checked. Also double checked Control Panel/Sounds to make sure certain events were assigned like New Mail, etc. And I mean the system is SILENT! Not even the default sound when changing the volume.
Now it gets better. After the sound goes away, I can put in an audio CD and it will start playing without sound. However, if I bring up the Windows standard CD Player (haven't downloaded WinAmp yet) and click to show the Volume controls, then ever so slightly increase the CD Player volume, the CD sound comes on. Unfortunately, no other sound works. Any ideas?? I keep feeling like it must be something simple, but I can't nail it down. C'mon, make me feel stupid and tell me how easy this is to fix. Please!
